Application Information

The Department of Political Science offers Fall admission only.

Completed applications received by January 15th will receive priority consideration for financial aid. After January 15th, applications will be considered on a rolling basis, through May 1st.

Applicants to the Political Science Department  submit materials to two separate units at UNM: (1) the Office of Admissions or the Office of International Admissions, and (2) The Political Science Department. In addition, applicants must ensure their GRE scores are sent to UNM, code 4845. All application materials must be received by the Department and Admissions offices on or before the dates indicated above.

Department of Political Science

All applicants submit the following materials to the department. All materials EXCEPT for official transcripts may be emailed directly to shandel@unm.edu

  • Application Cover Sheet
  • A short (1-2 page) letter of intent describing your interest in the study of political science at UNM.
  • Writing sample (preferably a research paper) illustrating analytical ability and stylistic mastery.
  • Three letters of recommendation, preferably from former instructors. Please ensure references include the completed cover form
  • Official transcript from each academic institution attended.*
  • NOT required, but helpful: A copy of the application form submitted to admissions. (If submitting an online application, please print a copy before submitting it or print your application summary).

* UNM transcripts do not need to be official.

GRE Scores

All applicants must have ETS send official GRE scores to UNM code #4845 (The ETS takes up to six weeks to report results, so plan ahead when selecting exam dates).
