Please join UNM Political Science as we welcome political science Pre-Law Advisor Larry Jones, and Drake School of Law Dean, Roscoe Jones Jr. for an open conversation with students about law, artificial intelligence, and other emerging issues in legal education.

Roscoe Jones, Jr. Dean and Professor of Law Drake Law School
Roscoe Jones, Jr. is the 22nd Dean of the Drake Law School and the first Black dean in its history. He has taught at the Yale, Chicago, Georgetown, and University of Michigan Law Schools and the Harvard Kennedy School, and most recently taught at Drake Law’s summer abroad program in Nantes, France.
Previously, Dean Jones was a Partner in the Washington, DC office of Gibson Dunn where he led the Public Policy Practice Group. He served on Capitol Hill from counsel to chief of staff, working for Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Senators Dianne Feinstein, Cory Booker, and Patrick Leahy on the Senate Judiciary Committee. He was special counsel to the Tom Perez, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Right; appellate attorney in the Civil Rights Division; and assistant U.S. attorney in the Western District of Washington. He clerked for Judge Carl E. Stewart on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and for Judge Alexander Williams, Jr. on U.S. District Court of Maryland. A college football player, he graduated with honors from Stanford University and the University of Virginia Law School, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Social Policy & Law.
He has received numerous honors including the National Bar Association’s Presidential Excellence Award and named one of the top 500 lawyers in America by Law.Dragon, top 100 national Black lawyers in America, and one of the top lobbyists on Capitol Hill by The.Hill, and was ChambersUSA.ranked in government relations.
He is a member of the American Law Institute, the Council on Foreign Relations, and a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. He has been a Murnaghan Fellow, a Stennis Fellow on Capitol Hill, and a Wasserstein Fellow at Harvard Law School and has been published in the Harvard.Law.™.Policy.Review.
He is the chair of the Board of the American Constitution Society and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and serves on the boards of the Des Moines Symphony, the Stanford Athletic Board, the International Spy Museum, and he is a member of the Steering Committee of the Association of American Law Schools.

Lawrence Jones, Visiting Lecturer; Pre-Law Student Advisor
Lawrence R. Jones is a UNM Visting Lecturer in the Political Science Department, member of the UNM Law Advisory Council, and newly appointed Pre-Law Student Advisor. He retired from the New Jersey Judiciary in 2017, after serving the public as a Superior Court Judge. During his years on the Bench, he served as the President of the New Jersey Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NJCJFCJ), and authored over 60 opinions on novel issues of law. Following his years in the Judiciary, he was appointed by N.J. Governor-elect Phil Murphy to serve on his gubernatorial transition team relative to legal issues and social justice. Thereafter, Professor Jones was appointed to teach at Monmouth University and Montclair University. In 2020, he was appointed to Monmouth University President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion.
He served on the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Legal Education Committee, and also served as the Vice-President and former director/legislative liaison of the Dispute Resolution Council . He was also appointed to the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Association of Professional Mediators. In his post-Judicial career, he authored the 10–part “Settlement Series” for the New Jersey Law Journal, which focuses on techniques for improving the possibility of settling high-conflict cases.
In 2022, Professor Jones and his family relocated to New Mexico. In addition to teaching at University of New Mexico since 2023, he has served as a restorative practice facilitator, and was appointed by the New Mexico Supreme Court as the Vice-Chair of the Court's Statewide Commission on Alternative Dispute Resolution. He has also served as a guest educator with the New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Professor Jones is also the co-creator and author of Point C, a public service educational resource regarding contentious family court litigation regarding children. He presents extensively on issues relating to domestic violence, family court issues involving children with autism, cultural awareness and sensitivity, and other legal subjects as well.
