Title: Women in Politics in the Middle East
Abstract: Women in the Middle East face widespread discrimination and confront barriers to entering arenas of political power. Scholars of political representation offer a number of explanations as to why women face such high barriers to entry in the political sphere. This paper seeks to better understand this worrying problem of political inequality by focusing on the attitudes and perspectives of those who already possess power, namely, men. We rely on theories in the psychology literature on threat perception to explore the reasons why many Middle Eastern men are opposed to women entering political spheres, in particular via the common practice of gender quotas. Using data from cross-national surveys as well as two original surveys, our paper provides a better understanding of the sources of resistance to women realizing an increased role as leaders.
